Helmet Banks: Safety You Can Borrow

A simple idea from Helmet Man of India – borrow a helmet for free, ride safely, and return it when done.

Helmet Banks are shelves full of ISI-certified helmets placed in key locations like CISF offices and Army campuses. Families, personnel and, in future, the public can borrow helmets without paying anything, just by showing ID.

The Concept

What Is a Helmet Bank?

Ten years after losing his roommate and friend in a road accident, Helmet Man of India started not only distributing helmets on the roads but also set up the first Helmet Bank.

As described in The Times of India article, the first Helmet Bank in Noida was opened at a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) office. It is available for families of CISF personnel, who can avail helmets by presenting their identity cards.

The idea is simple: a dedicated place where multiple helmets are kept, ready for immediate use by those who need them and cannot buy or carry their own.

Official Proposal

Helmet Banks on Army Campuses

The official proposal section in the profile explains a plan to set up a Helmet Bank on Army campuses to provide helmets to soldiers and their families, ensuring their safety on the roads.

The belief is that such an initiative will significantly reduce road accidents among soldiers and become a model for other communities to follow.

This ties into the wider collaboration with senior Army officers like Lt Gen Preetpal Singh and others, who have appreciated and supported Helmet Man of India's mission.

Supported by multiple appreciation letters from Army leadership (see About / Impact pages).

Army Campus Initiative

Proposed Model

  • Helmets for soldiers and their families
  • Reduce road accidents among defence personnel
  • Model for nationwide implementation
  • Backed by senior Army officers
Community Initiative

Villages of Deceased Soldiers & Local Communities

The profile also outlines a plan to establish Helmet Banks in villages of deceased soldiers, offering free helmets to local residents. This honours the sacrifice of soldiers by protecting families and communities connected to them.

  • Free helmets for villagers in memory of fallen soldiers
  • Long-term safety infrastructure in rural and semi-urban areas
  • Community ownership and awareness around road safety

"Honouring sacrifice by protecting the communities our soldiers leave behind."

The Need

Why Helmet Banks Are Needed

According to the road safety statistics in the official profile:

  • 1,25,873 road accidents and 53,090 deaths in India in 2025, including 1,200 soldiers.
  • Each fatality costs the government around ₹90 lakhs.
  • India sees 1,264 accidents and 462 deaths every single day.

Helmet Banks lower the financial and practical barriers to helmet use, especially for soldiers, their families and public users, directly helping to reduce these numbers.
